Coffee with alcohol? Double celebration...or not?

You had a lovely meal in a restaurant (it's allowed again!) and for dessert you have a coffee with something extra. Irish coffee, Italian coffee, or a popular Espresso martini. Coffee with a kick & a bite. Blown to enjoy. But what does that combination do to your body? We explain.

A good meal provides a feeling of satisfaction and often also a after dinner dip. In other words: you feel a bit lethargic and your body needs rest. Something you might want to avoid. After all, the evening is still young. Time for a coffee. With a tap. So opt for coffee with a dash of alcohol. This combination can have the following effect on your body:

  1. Tired yet alert

Coffee and alcohol have contradictory characters. The caffeine in coffee provides a kickstart and suppresses your sleepiness, while alcohol makes you sleepy. After soldiering on a coffee with liqueur or other alcoholic spirits in it, you may feel that you are not under the influence at all. The coffee masks the effects of the alcohol, as it were. But don't be fooled, caffeine doesn't make you sober. The effects of alcohol are therefore exactly the same, only you are less aware of it. There is a risk that you will drink more alcohol because 'you won't feel it anyway'. But here too, the hangover comes later.

  1. What a (after) thirst!

What caffeine and alcohol do have in common is that they both have a dehydrating effect on your body. So together they are a kind of super-dryers. If you don't have enough fluid in your body, you can have a headache, thirst and nausea the next day. In other words, a strong hangover.

  1. Oh those organs

Too much alcohol and caffeine are bad for your heart. Both 'delicacies' and especially too much of them increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, neither caffeine nor alcohol is conducive to sleep. Regular poor sleep can also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Coffee recipes with a kick but without alcohol

Okay, so coffee with a liqueur or something else alcoholic is not the best combination. But you are looking for a coffee recipe with a kick. Maybe there's something in between?

cinnamon coffee

Cinnamon is a spice that is mainly used in desserts. Cinnamon also comes into its own in coffee. Curious how? Then take a quick look at the recipe below.

Ingredients

1 cup of coffee

1 tablespoon cinnamon syrup

Milk

cinnamon sugar

Cinnamon stick (optional)

Preparation

Make a cup of coffee.

Heat the milk and froth it.

Place the cinnamon syrup in a coffee mug.

Add the coffee and cinnamon sugar to this.

Finally, add some of the milk and milk foam.

To allow the cinnamon flavor to soak into the coffee extra, you can put a cinnamon stick in the coffee for decoration.

Homemade iced coffee 

This iced coffee is completely plant-based. I use the Alpro Creamy Almond, made from caramelized almonds. And for the beautiful foam layer I use the Alpro Barista Oat. The latter is specially intended for foaming and can even be foamed cold. The easiest way to do this is with a milk frother, but you can also do this with, for example, a whisk.

Iced coffee with chocolate

To give it a little extra flavor, I added chocolate. Anyone who knows me knows that I love good, dark chocolate. I found a vegan version in the supermarket. Totally perfect for this iced coffee! I melted part of it for the bottom. We grate the other part over it at the end. Blown away!

Less sugar

An additional advantage of this homemade variant is that it contains much less sugar than what you would normally buy at a coffee chain. And yet wonderfully full of flavour.
