Fancy a glass? This is how you resist the temptation!

You have agreed with yourself that you will not drink for a period of time. Super! But what do you do when your mind regularly turns to your favorite alcoholic drink? How do you deal with that desire? Read here how you can suppress your cravings.

You may have taken some precautions before embarking on this break. You've hidden your booze supply somewhere that's hard to grab. You gave the bottles you had lying around to a good friend. You drank everything before your break started. On your fridge is a list of benefits to remind you of the benefits of an alcohol break. You have set a savings goal. Well, there are a lot of ways to make the break period a little easier for yourself.

But what you can't (completely) control are your thoughts. They sometimes take you for a walk. Before you know it, you'll be daydreaming about a cool glass of white wine or swearing to taste the froth of your favorite beer. Those thoughts can turn into a desire. Also called a 'craving' or 'pull'. That craving for, in this case, alcohol can be quite compelling and irritating. Here are some tips on dealing with that desire.

Tips

-Do you find yourself craving alcohol? Don't stop this feeling. Acknowledge that it is there. One way of dealing with an appetite or a craving is to sit out. Do not run away from it, but very consciously experience what that desire feels like. It will go away on its own. Sooner or later. One way to satisfy that craving is to focus on your breathing. Just close your eyes and breathe in and out slowly.

Do you benefit more from action than from sitting still? Then look for distraction. Does not matter what. Change all the beds in the house. Go for a run. wash your car. Read a book. Sing along to the radio very loud. Hoe the garden. It doesn't matter what you do, as long as you do something else.

-Call your mother, friend, brother, niece, sister, tennis buddy, chess buddy or hang over the hedge to talk to your neighbor. Talk to someone you trust, who you feel comfortable with, and with whom you dare to be yourself. But talk to someone.

-Try to look at pull differently. Trek is not in control of you. It's the other way around. You are in charge of that pull. You are stronger than that desire, because appetite will pass whether you drink alcohol or not.
