Getting drunk without drinking alcohol

Regardless of whether you'd like to…it's weird to get drunk without alcohol involved. Yet there are different ways to do this. One is more achievable than the other, by the way.

Way 1: The placebo effect

Can you get drunk without drinking a drop of alcohol? According to the trial that the Bavaria brewery did. The beer brand invited 90 people to come and party and of course drink during the final of a European Championship. The yellow gold flowed freely, the alcohol-free version for clarity. Something the revelers didn't know. They thought they were drinking beer with alcohol. Despite this sober party, after taking quite a few glasses, boys and girls were seen laughing and stumbling. This is also known as the placebo effect. Source: weirdmaarwaar.nl.

How does a placebo effect work?

In the case of a placebo effect, a positive expectation (yay, party, yes we are going to have a drink) strengthens the effect of the beer/alcohol in this case. Because the revelers thought they were drinking alcohol, they also experienced its 'pleasant' effects. In short: it's just really between the ears. Source: benuapotheek.nl.

Way 2: Getting tipsy from the smell of alcohol

A study published in the journal Psychopharmacology found that just inhaling the smell of alcohol can make you feel a little tipsy and take some of your inhibitions away.

To test how smelling a whiff of whiskey affects our brains and behavior, a team of researchers put on face masks treated with an alcohol solution to a group of participants. The other group was given a mask with a non-alcoholic citrus solution, after which both teams had to make impulse tests on the computer.

All participants were instructed to press a button when they saw the letter K or a picture of a beer bottle appear on the screen. Sounds simple, but alcohol inhalation caused the button to be pressed too late more often than those wearing a non-alcoholic mask. Source: harpersbazaar.nl.

Way 3: Getting Drunk Thanks to Auto-brewery Syndrome

If you have auto-brewery syndrome, your body converts the carbohydrates you eat into units of alcohol. This medical condition is also known as gut fermentation. This means that there is yeast and fungi in the upper small intestine and cecum. This ferments the food into alcohol. You can't imagine a pleasant ailment. Source: rtlnieuws.nl.
